The Science Behind My Skin Routine in a Glass

Beauty supplements often promise more than the science can deliver, but Dr. Jen found the research behind Pique’s Skin + Hair Longevity Protocol compelling enough to make it part of her own routine. Here’s what the evidence says about hyaluronic acid, phytoceramides, and marine collagen—and where the science is still limited.

I'm skeptical of beauty supplements. Most of them promise more than the science can deliver. So when I looked at Pique's B·T Fountain, part of their Skin + Hair Longevity Protocol, I went straight to the research behind its two key ingredients. After I did, I was intrigued. After using this duo for over four years now, I’m convinced.

Hyaluronic acid has the strongest evidence

A 2025 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Scientific Reports, tested oral sodium hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid (HA), in healthy adults. At 120 mg a day, it significantly improved facial hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. It also reduced water loss through the skin, oil production, and wrinkle depth around the eyes, and it increased skin thickness, density, and natural moisturizing factor. A lower dose of 60 mg a day had more modest effects. Broader reviews support HA's role in hydration, collagen and elastin production, and wrinkle reduction, whether it's applied to the skin or taken orally.

One honest caveat: The clearest benefit was at 120 mg a day. One sachet of B·T Fountain contains 30mg. This dose was not tested in this study, but it’s certainly possible that there can be positive effects with this lower dose, and remember, this is a nutritional bonus or “add”—it’s not pharmaceutical strength medication.

Pique also reports results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the ceramide blend used in B·T Fountain. According to Pique, participants saw a 16% increase in skin hydration, 18% improvement in elasticity, and an 11% reduction in wrinkles by day 15, increasing by day 60 to 21%, 26%, and 18%, respectively. While this is data that is funded by the manufacturer, the results do align with other published science on the dermatologic effects of oral supplementation.

Phytoceramides support your skin barrier

Ceramides are the fats that hold your skin cells together, like mortar between bricks. Their levels drop with age and in dry, eczema-prone, or psoriatic skin. The ceramides in B·T Fountain come from non-GMO wheat. In animal and human studies, oral plant-based ceramides have improved hydration and barrier function by reducing water loss and restoring healthy oil and pH levels. That said, the evidence base is still limited. Phytosphingosine, an ingredient in B·T Fountain, helps skin produce its own natural moisturizing factor, although generally that effect is seen with topical use.

My n of 1

I've been drinking the Radiant Skin Duo every day for four years, and I've absolutely seen a difference in my skin. You won't find that in a study, and I won't pretend it's data. It's my n of 1, and it's why this has stayed in my routine. I feel good about the science, the ingredients, the manufacturing process and the fact that drinking both encourages me to drink more water (which is also great for skin!).

Where collagen fits in

If you’ve been reading for a while, you already know I’m also a fan of Pique’s Carrara Marine Collagen Peptides. It’s a dual Type I and Type II marine collagen system backed by research as well, not just brand claims. In a third-party observational study of 35 adults ages 30–60, 74% reported fuller-looking hair. I’ve seen real results from it myself, in terms of skin and hair, especially when used with the Radiant Skin Duo (B·T Fountain and Sun Goddess Matcha). It also contains a small amount of biotin (100 mcg), well below the level that can interfere with blood tests.

Collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm, gives your skin its structural foundation, while HA and ceramides support hydration and the skin barrier that sits on top of that structure. Sun Goddess Matcha rounds it out with catechins like EGCG, antioxidants that help protect the collagen you’re building from oxidative stress in the first place.

These three products are solving different parts of the same problem, not competing for the same job. So I think it’s smart that Pique now offers them together as their Skin + Hair Longevity Protocol—along with a few free gifts. If you’ve been curious about these products, this is the easiest way to start incorporating them into your routine. I’m always an advocate of doing your own experiment: test it out for 3-6 months and see if you notice any difference.
