I Started Nourishing My Skin From the Inside Out, and People Noticed

Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on your face. Dr. Jen shares why she believes nourishing skin from the inside out matters, highlighting matcha, hydration, oral ceramides, and hyaluronic acid alongside the sunscreen and topical skincare she already relies on.

I want to start with something I have believed for years, long before I decided to start my partnership with Pique: Skin health is not just about what we put on our face. It’s also about what we put into our body.

For the past three years, I have had at least one Sun Goddess Matcha and one B·T Fountain almost every day. They are always in my rotation, I travel with them, and I genuinely think my skin looks better because of it. More hydrated. Brighter. Just healthier looking. And, somewhat hilariously, people compliment my skin now, which NEVER used to happen.

Sun Goddess Matcha is 100% organic ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha grown in Kagoshima, Japan, where the tea is mountain-grown, shade-grown, and crafted by third-generation tea masters. And because where your matcha comes from matters, Pique goes a step beyond the organic label by third-party screening every batch for 500+ pesticides. Matcha is naturally rich in catechins, including the antioxidant EGCG. Human studies of green-tea catechins have also shown some intriguing skin effects. In one randomized, double-blind study of 60 women, 12 weeks of a green-tea-polyphenol beverage improved measures including elasticity, roughness, skin density, and water homeostasis, while reducing UV-induced redness. Other trials have been less impressive, however, so green tea should be viewed as a supportive part of a skin-health routine—not a replacement for SPF.

Then there’s B·T Fountain, which contains electrolytes, plus phytoceramides from wheat seed extract and sodium hyaluronate, an oral form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is the active ingredient in injectable fillers that works by actually pulling water into the area to aid in volume and “plumpness.”

I’m particularly interested in the ceramides that are in B·T Fountain because ceramides are essential lipids in our skin barrier. They help the skin retain water, and that barrier function becomes increasingly relevant as we get older and skin becomes naturally drier. Randomized controlled trials of oral wheat-derived ceramides have shown improvements in hydration, elasticity, radiance, and wrinkle appearance. One study of women ages 45 to 60 found significant improvements in facial hydration, roughness, and radiance after supplementation. Another trial that included postmenopausal women found improvements in hydration, elasticity, transepidermal water loss, and wrinkle depth within weeks.

Oral hyaluronic acid also has surprisingly good clinical data behind it. Numerous randomized trials have shown improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles, including studies specifically enrolling middle-aged and older adults.

Pique also reports results from a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the ceramide blend used in B·T Fountain. According to Pique, participants saw a 16% increase in skin hydration, 18% improvement in elasticity, and an 11% reduction in wrinkles by day 15, increasing by day 60 to 21%, 26%, and 18%, respectively. I would note that this is company-funded research rather than independent proof of the entire Radiant Skin Duo Protocol, but I still find it interesting, particularly because it lines up with the broader published literature on oral ceramides.

For me, this is where skincare gets more interesting after 50. I still use sunscreen every single day. I still use topical skincare. I am not replacing any of that with matcha or any other beverage. But I also believe skin deserves to be nourished from the inside out as well as the outside in.

Three years in, I swear by these two. And if you look in my suitcase or handbag, they’re always in there.
